Welcome to the Computer Science Department
The mission of the Computer Science Department is the creation and transmission of knowledge about the computer science discipline and profession. The mission has three components: teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and service. Foremost in the department mission is the commitment to excellence in all of three areas.
The department strives to prepare students well for either graduate school or a professional career. Our graduates are expected to be able to make the connection between theory and application. We support our faculty efforts to expand the body of knowledge, disseminate their findings through publication and consulting, and engage in intellectual inquiry. Our faculty are involved in curriculum development, textbook writing, and pedagogical innovations. Faculty members are encouraged to play a service role on the campus, throughout the CSU system, and in the local community.
Program is ABET Accredited
The baccalaureate program (Bachelor of Science in Computer Science) is accredited by the Computer Science Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Cyber Defense: Students Win Third in Competition
Months of preparation paid off for a group of students in the Department of Computer Science at California State University, Dominguez Hills, who began their Spring Break as the third place winners in the 2012 Western Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition.
“When they called us up to present our team with the third place medals, I don’t think anyone on the team expected it,” said senior computer technology major John Harwell, who served as team captain. “This was a very tough competition… . So needless to say, we were extremely happy with the results. It more than made up for all the effort that everyone on the team put forth.”

IT Security Pros Go Full Year with No Joblessness
Employment among IT security professionals in the United States rose significantly throughout 2011, as unemployment virtually was nonexistent among those with cybersecurity skills, according to an Information Security Media Group analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data published Friday.
The number of information security analysts employed rose by more than one-third to 51,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011, up from 37,000 in the first quarter. Averaging four quarters of data, 44,000 IT security professionals were employed in 2011. Data culled from the household surveys the BLS conducts to determine the national unemployment rate showed no joblessness in each of 2011's four quarters in the standard occupation category labeled information security analysts, which includes a wide range of IT security roles.
