Woodcraft Rangers is one of the largest non-profit after-school program providers in Los Angeles County. We serve 12,000+ K-12 students annually, at over 60 schools in three districts. Our mission is to guide young people as they explore pathways to purposeful lives.
INTERNSHIP / VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Woodcraft Rangers has opportunities in fall 2016 for CSUDH students interested in working with youth (elementary, middle and/or high school) at our NVISION After-School programs in the Los Angeles area. Students will be welcomed into the world of Woodcraft Rangers to assist in the implementation of innovative STEM curriculum (computer coding, 3D printing, Cyber Patriots, robotics, etc.) that has provided expanded learning and enrichment opportunities for kids in some of the most high need areas of Los Angeles.
We are looking for students with academic and/or professional experience in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics, Science, Game Design and Digital Arts. We have openings at schools located near the CSUDH campus. There are two ways CSUDH Students can get involved. The first is by applying for the STEM Internship. Interested candidates must be available to work Monday-Friday, between 3:00pm to 6:00pm for the duration of the school’s semester (a minimum of 3 days per week.) The second is the STEM Volunteer program where CSUDH students can mentor a club or coach a club as they prepare for a competition. Students interested should submit their resume to firstname.lastname@example.org. Write STEM INTERNSHIP or STEM VOLUNTEER in the subject line. A STIPEND will be provided for the STEM Internship only. School Credit will be provided for both interns and volunteers.
The MIT Digital Currency Initiative is excited to announce a week-long intensive bootcamp covering key cryptocurrency concepts for women and underrepresented people of color. The event will take place at the MIT Media Lab August 21–26, 2016. The Kapor Center for Social Impact and Xapo have generously donated $70,000 to cover each student’s flights, hotel and other expenses to cover the cost of the bootcamp.
The Cyber Security Center is still in the process of upgrading our network. Because of this, we have not made plans host any cyber security tools classes, capture the flags, or king of the hill competitions. The continuation of the upgrade of the Cyber Security Center is our next project, now that the team is done will the WRCCDC. The Cyber Security Club will also be hosting events over the summer and will notify our members when events have been planned.
The Toro Cyber Defense Team competed in the 2016 Western Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition last month. The competition took place March 17th through the 20th, and was located at the Sheraton Fairplex in Pomona. The team fought long and hard, and we placed 6th. The WRCCDC is a lot of fun, and I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to compete again. If fact, all but one member of the team is graduating this May or next semester, and will be unable to compete again. We will be recruiting new members over the summer and next fall to build a new Toro Cyber Defense Team for the 2017 season. The Cyber Security Club will be hosting an election on Friday, April 29th. This election will decide the President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary for the following year. I will be graduating this May and will no longer be your President. We are looking for talented and dedicated individuals to take leadership in our club. If you are interested in running for office, please send us an email to nominate someone for office. We will take nominations up to the time of the vote.
Dr. Liudong Zuo from Computer Science Department is looking for one or two self-motivated research assistants. His research interests and experience mainly focus on Computer Networks, Big Data Management, and Algorithm Design and Application. His current research emphasizes big data transfer with guaranteed performance by using the bandwidth reservation service in dedicated high-performance networks. The most typical example of such network is ESnet (https://www.es.net/). He plans to extend his research areas to Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition and Data Mining in the near future.
Dr. Zuo is particularly interested in candidates with research experience in network, and strong math, algorithm design and programming background. First year graduate students or seniors who plan to attend the graduate programs here are preferred.

A team of Computer Science students qualified for the Western Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (http://www.wrccdc.org/) on January 30, 2016. Of fourteen colleges and universities, CSU Dominguez Hills placed third behind first place UC Berkley and second place Cal Poly Pomona.
The Western Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition will be held March 18-19, 2016. The CCDC is unique in that it focuses on the operational aspect of managing and protecting an existing network infrastructure. While other exercises examine the abilities of a group of students to design, configure, and protect a network over the course of an entire semester, this competition is focused on the more operational task of assuming administrative and protective duties for an existing “commercial” network. Teams are scored based on their ability to detect and respond to outside threats, maintain availability of existing services such as mail servers and web servers, respond to business requests such as the addition or removal of additional services, and balance security needs against business needs.

The spring 2016 semester is under way. This semester is going to be busy for the Cyber Security Club, as we are preparing to compete in the Western Regional Collegiate Cyber Defence Competition (WRCCDC), and we are also planning a Cyber Security Conference for everyone on campus.
We are working on setting the hours of operation for the Cyber Security Center and we will notify everyone as soon as we can.
The Cyber Security Club now has a social media page on Toro Link. Toro Link is a website that hosts all of the clubs on campus, and allows clubs and students to easily connect with each other. As we move forward, we will be transitioning over to Toro Link. This will make it easier for us to manage members, as well as members to manage their communications with the club. You will need to log into Toro Link using your campus email account, as you would MyCSUDH, but you can change your email preferences in the settings. Make sure to join us on Toro Link, as communications with migrate from this email list to Toro Link.
Cyber Security Center Remodel
We have remodeled the Cyber Security Center a bit and it is looking very nice. We are not fully done with the remodel, as we are awaiting a few more items to arrive. We wanted everything to be done before the semester started, but it happens. In it’s current state, we have most of the computers connected to the internet and Wi-Fi available. The EDGE Program is administered by Morehouse and Pomona Colleges with the goal of strengthening the ability of women students to successfully complete PhD programs in the mathematical sciences and place more women in visible leadership roles in the mathematics community. Along with the summer session, EDGE supports an annual conference, travel for research collaborations, travel to present research and other open-ended mentoring activities.
2016 Summer Session
The 2016 EDGE summer session will be held June 6 – July 2, 2016 at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The local coordinators are Edray Goins (Purdue University) and Alejandra Alvarado (Eastern Illinois University). Participants receive a $3000 stipend plus travel, room and board. The application deadline for the program is Tuesday, March 1, 2016. Participants to the program will be announced in mid-April.

Co-op and internship programs are an important recruiting channel for IBM because they help us identify high-potential prospective employees. Participating students are often considered for repeat internships or a long-term commitment of regular employment. Our philosophy, simply stated, is recruit once, hire twice.
The Blue Waters Graduate Fellowship Program is a unique program funded by the National Science Foundation. As part of this program, several graduate students from across the country will get to immerse themselves in a year of focused high-performance computing (HPC) and data-intensive research. The fellowships will empower these talented budding scientists and engineers to advance their HPC knowledge while also providing them with access to Blue Waters and support to accelerate their research.
The fellowship is designed to support PhD students who are engaged in a program of study and research that is directly relevant to the use of the Blue Waters supercomputer. Preference will be given to candidates engaged in a multidisciplinary research project that combines disciplines such as computer science, applied mathematics and computational science applications.
Fellowship recipients will receive a stipend of $38,000 for the year-long fellowship. They will also receive up to a $12,000 tuition allowance. During the fellowship year, the fellow’s academic institution is asked to exempt the recipient of any other tuition and fee charges normally charged to students of comparable academic standing. Recipients will receive travel funds to attend the Blue Waters symposium. The fellowship provides up to 50,000 node-hours on the Blue Waters system to support the fellow’s research.
