Course Outline

This course is a compedium of basic knowledge and skills in computer literacy that every college student should possess in order to attain academic and professional success in today's academia, economy, and society of the information age. The course's intended audience are all those who have not yet undergone a formal comprehensive training in use of computers, computer networks, and application software.

No prerequisite knowledge beyond high school curriculum is required.


COURSE GOALS:    
  • To familiarize students with fundamentals of computers, computer networks, and application software.
  • To provide students with hands-on experience with windows, files, directories, electronic mail, word processing, spreadsheets, web pages, Internet, slides, computer graphics, and databases, using currently available commercial software packages.
  • To introduce students to legal and ethical aspects of using computers and computer networks, including intellectual property and its protection, as well as to privacy issues that may arrise as a result of proliferation of computers, computer networks, and computer-based technologies.
       
COURSE OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of usage, operation, and applications of personal computers and networks, including the ability to post and access information on the World Wide Web, communicate by electronic mail, and acquire and process information with multimedia. The students will be able to exhibit practical knowledge of electronic file system,
word processing, spreadsheets, web page composition, Internet searching, slides preparation, image editing, and databases. The students will also exhibit awareness of legal, ethical, and privacy issues pertaining to computers and their use.
